Typically, individuals seeking residence in Japan must attain a Permanent Residence Visa. To be eligible for permanent residency in Japan, you must meet certain requirements, including:
• Length of residence: You must have lived in Japan continuously for at least 10 years.
• Stable income: You must have a stable income and living foundation.
• Good behavior: You must have no criminal records or traffic offenses, and you must pay taxes.
• Tax compliance: You must have a clear tax record and pay taxes on time.
• Social security contributions: You must contribute to the official Japanese social security system.
• Notifications: You must submit all required notifications to the Immigration office.
• Guarantor: You must have a guarantor who is a Japanese national or permanent resident visa holder.
Other requirements include:
Having sufficient socio-economic status and assets.
Maintaining visa status.
A marriage certificate, if married.
Proof of employment.
Completed application form.
The guideline for the Permanent Resident Visa application was updated in April 2017. The requirement of the 10 year consecutive residency was shortened in the following cases:
Spouses of Japanese nationals and Permanent Residents having been married for more than 3 years and lived more than one year consecutively in Japan.
Children of Japanese nationals and Permanent Residents having lived more than one year consecutively in Japan.
Holder of Long Term Resident visa or Refugee status having lived more than 5 years consecutively in Japan.
Applicants who scores 70 points in this Point Calculation Table at the time of application and at all times during the most recent 3 years of residency leading up to the application
Applicants who scores 80 points in the said Table during the past one year of residency leading up to the application
Applicants with more than 5 years of consecutive residency in Japan for those who have been recognized for having made a considerable contribution to Japan in diplomatic, social, economical and cultural fields.
